The health benefits of gardening are widely reported. However, one area that is often overlooked is the positive impact that gardening can have on the lives of those with dementia.
Alzheimer’s Society has carried out extensive work into the area and has promotes the benefits of gardening for those with the disease. Gardening can be an enriching experience and being in contact with nature promotes wellbeing, reduces stress and lowers blood pressure – all contributing factors to the severity of the disease.
The multi-sensory stimulation of gardening and just simply being near plants has been linked with prompting memories and boosting enjoyment for some of the 850,000 people who are currently living with dementia in the UK – a number which is set to rise to one million by 2021.
To support the work of Alzheimer’s Society to help those with dementia be more involved in gardening; and to help them feel comfortable in getting back out in the garden, The Posh Shed Company has formed a partnership with the charity.
As part of the partnership, five per cent from the sale of every Southwold beach-hut style shed, purchased in “Forget Me Not” blue, will be donated to Alzheimer’s Society to support the charity’s “Forget Me Not” gardening campaign which promotes encouraging garden centres to be more dementia friendly.
Ray Nash, Senior Regional Corporate Fundraising Executive for Alzheimer’s Society said: “We are delighted to be partnering with The Posh Shed Company and we value their commitment to supporting people affected by dementia. These funds will help support people currently living with the condition and drive new research into dementia.”
Discussing the new partnership, Richard Frost, MD of The Posh Shed Company, said; “People affected by dementia often have to give up the activities they enjoy, this unfortunately includes gardening. Alzheimer’s Society carry out some fantastic work and we are thrilled to be able to work with them to help promote the link between gardening and dementia.”
Inspired by the traditional coastal design with a covered veranda, The Southwold has a high diamond-shaped rear window, allowing maximum storage or shelving without impacting on the view. The shed measures 5ft by 5ft (including the 1ft veranda) and is available in all Posh Shed colours with the choice of three different roof options: felt shingle, slate effect and cedar shingle. Prices start from £2,350.
