Lake District café and farm shop comes to market
A landmark café and farm shop in the Lake District has been brought to market through property adviser Christie & Co. The Sawmill Café & Farm Shop, located in Wasdale beneath the backdrop of Scafell Pike, occupies a restored 19th-century sawmill on the banks of the River Irt.
The business combines a café, farm shop and extensive indoor and outdoor seating areas, with a working waterwheel and millrace running through the building. Situated within the Lake District National Park, it has developed a strong reputation among tourists and local residents alike.
According to Christie & Co, the site offers more than 146 covers across its indoor and outdoor spaces, together with ample parking and a substantial footprint. The agent says the business is highly profitable while currently operating relatively limited trading hours, providing potential opportunities for future growth.
The current owners, Kirsten Manduell and Julius Manduell, have decided to sell as they prepare for retirement. They restored and converted the buildings during 2018 and 2019, with the café opening in 2020.
Explaining the decision, the owners said they had been involved with the business for almost a decade and now wished to focus on their farm and holiday park operations, while spending more time with family.
Commenting on the sale, Marslie McGregor, Senior Business Agent for Pubs & Restaurants at Christie & Co, described the property as a rare opportunity, citing its profitable trading operation, established customer base and location within one of the UK's most visited national parks.
The Sawmill Café & Farm Shop is being offered for sale freehold, with the price available on application.
