A unique Daylily with blooms that last a week, and an awesome azalea, cute and compact but prolific in flower, are taking Thompson & Morgan to Chelsea!
The online seed and plant retailer, with a history in mail order seed supply dating back to 1855, has used its horticultural know-how to pick out two top contenders for this year’s prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show Plant of the Year.
T&M's modern day plant hunter Peter Freeman and his team travel to nurseries around the world, on the lookout for plants with the potential to make it into UK gardens. Their keen eyes have brought many past winners to the show’s awards including Digitalis ‘Illumination Pink’ (2012), Hydrangea ‘Runaway Bride’ (2018) and in 2023 took first place for Agapanthus ‘Black Jack’ (2023) as well as second and third place! They certainly do have an eye for a winner!
New to gardeners this year, Hemerocallis ‘See You Tomorrow’ has been shortlisted for its unique long flowering habit, performance in containers and ease of care.
While Rhododendron ‘Pink Star’ has been chosen for its compact, symmetrical doming habit, sheer volume of flowers and suitability to small spaces and containers, reaching just 60cm tall and 1m wide.
Could T&M’s duo add to their trophy haul in 2025? Peter thinks so:
"We have something really different with our latest Daylily. It’s more than a Daylily, it’s a week-long lily! Giving more flower power than any other Hemerocallis. Its compact nature lends well to containers as well as border displays, bringing a unique specimen to the patio.”
“With Rhododendron ‘Pink Star’ we have a stand out shrub that will be the star in any garden situation, from large mixed borders to compact balcony displays. I personally think its best in a stylish pot on the patio where you can really enjoy its shape and colour.”
