Silver Medal for first time Chelsea designer Alan Williams

The Parsley Box garden, created by first-time Chelsea designer, Alan Williams, has received a highly coveted Silver Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2021.

The spectacular garden, which is in the new Sanctuary Garden Category, has already attracted plenty of attention from celebrities at this year’s autumn show.

Speaking of the medal, designer of the garden, Alan Williams said: “This whole experience feels like a pinch-me moment. I am delighted to have won a Silver Medal, especially with this being my first ever garden at Chelsea Flower Show. It’s a huge achievement.

It has a been a joy bringing the wonderful vision behind the garden to life over the past few weeks. It has been a huge team effort and this fantastic award is for everyone involved.

Aiming to champion the over 60s, the Parsley Box Sanctuary Garden is a place to entertain friends, dine and relax in, as well as a space where fresh ideas are sown that challenge the stereotype of ageing.

Sponsored by Parsley Box, the rapidly growing provider of ready meals focused on the Baby Boomer + demographic, this garden represents the vitality of its customers.

Joint founder of Parsley Box, Adrienne MacAulay, said: “We are delighted with our prestigious Silver Medal, for our first Chelsea garden. We have loved creating something to uplift our customers after such a challenging couple of years and we hope to have gone some way in empowering our demographic with a design the reflects their zest for life. The elegantly designed contemporary garden offers a modern twist on the traditional kitchen garden, reimagining a relatively small outdoor space to become a place to cook and socialise with friends.

Inspired by the celebrated Nordic restaurant Noma, four-time winner of Best Restaurant in the World, The Parsley Box Garden, focuses on conserving nature’s bounty through fermentation and perseveration. With self-sustainability at the heart of the garden, the borders are brimming with edibles to forage and ferment as well as home grown vegetables to bring flavour to dishes while minimising food waste. Alan’s garden also features fragrant herbs, edible flowers and perennials in its borders.

A custom-made outdoor kitchen area with a green wall and storage sits at the edge of the garden alongside a wooden cantilevered pergola stretched over a Dutch oval dining table.

The garden is designed to subtly bring the conversation around ageing to the fore, but also to celebrate life at every stage. The brass planters are specifically aged to allude to maturing with grace and beauty, contemporary slick concrete structures reference the stability of firm foundations and reclaimed wood hints at the fluidity of changes in identity throughout life.

RHS Chelsea Flower Show takes place from Tuesday 21st to Sunday 26th September.
