Specialist nurseries unite to form NEO
The newly launched Nursery Exhibitors Organisation (NEO) has been established to support and promote the UK’s specialist nursery sector, amid concerns over a significant long‑term decline in grower numbers. In 2006, more than 800 specialist nurseries were listed in the RHS Plant Finder; two decades later, fewer than half remain.
Formed by a group of independent nurseries, NEO aims to champion the role of specialist growers in plant conservation, horticultural expertise and the supply of high‑quality, diverse plant material.
The organisation plans to raise public and industry awareness of specialist nurseries, promote British‑grown plants, and expand opportunities for nurseries to exhibit through plant marquees, fairs and “plant villages” at events nationwide.
NEO also intends to support new entrants to the sector through mentoring and to encourage careers in specialist nursery growing. Membership has already exceeded 70 nurseries, with further recruitment ongoing.
Its new website provides a searchable directory of members by location and plant type, as well as a national events list where the public can buy directly from growers. NEO is also supported by a group of industry champions, honorary members and associate members from plant societies and horticultural organisations.
The organisation has confirmed it is applying for registered charity status.
