New Chair named for Forestry Commission

Company: Forestry Commission

Baroness Barbara Young of Old Scone has been appointed as the new Chair of the Forestry Commission following the conclusion of Sir William Worsley’s six-year tenure.

Her four-year term will begin on 10 February 2026. The appointment was made by Royal Warrant from His Majesty King Charles III.

Baroness Young brings extensive leadership experience in environmental protection, land management and public service. She previously served as Chair of the Woodland Trust and has held senior roles including Chief Executive of the Environment Agency and Chair of the Care Quality Commission.

She said it would be a privilege to join the Forestry Commission at a time when the importance of trees, woods and forests is increasing for climate resilience, biodiversity, communities and the economy.

Minister for Nature Mary Creagh welcomed the appointment, saying Baroness Young’s experience made her well placed to champion England’s trees and woodlands, while thanking Sir William Worsley for his service.

Forestry Commission Chief Executive Richard Stanford also praised Sir William’s contribution, adding that Baroness Young’s leadership would support the organisation’s strategy to address environmental and societal challenges through thriving forests and woodland management.
