The Society of Garden designers has announced Horatio's Garden - the national charity that creates and nurtures beautiful gardens in NHS spinal injury centres to support those affected by spinal injury - as its new charity partner for the SGD Awards 2021.

Money raised at the SGD Awards ceremony on 11th June 2021 will be donated to help Horatio's Garden continue its invaluable work. Earlier this year nearly £2,000 was raised for the therapeutic horticulture charity Thrive, at the SGD Awards 2020. It is hoped the same can be achieved for Horatio's Garden in 2021.

Lynne Marcus, Chair of the SGD said:  “We are thrilled to be working with such a worthy charity as Horatio's Garden and we hope the partnership will help them to continue the important work they do. It is especially pleasing to be working with an organisation that many of our members are actively involved with. We hope it will be a great success.”

Dr Olivia Chapple, Trustee at Horatio's Garden said  “We are absolutely delighted to have been chosen as the SGD Award’s charity partner. It’s wonderful to know that we’re well supported by so many friends in the garden design community, which will really help Horatio’s Garden to continue to have a positive impact on the lives of everyone affected by spinal injury.”

About Horatio's Garden
Working with some of the UK's leading garden designers including SGD members Cleve West MSGD, James Alexander-Sinclair MSGD and Tom Stuart-Smith MSGD, the Horatio's Garden creates gardens that provide beautiful outdoor space all year round for patients, their families and friends enduring long stays in NHS hospitals.

So far, five gardens have opened across the UK with another currently being designed. In each one the charity funds a Head Gardener who leads a team of volunteers caring for the garden and offering creative and therapeutic activities designed to improve the psychological outcomes of patients and their families as they adjust to life changing injuries.

In 2014, Horatio's Garden, Salisbury designed by Cleve West, won three awards at the SGD Awards ceremony including the People's Choice Award and the Judge's Award.

About the SGD Awards 2021
Taking place later than usual, in June 2021, the SGD Awards ceremony will be one of the Society's major events marking its 40th anniversary year and a celebration of excellence in garden design following the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Sixteen award categories, including two new categories for 2021, are now open for entries. The new award categories include an environmental award which will be open to the public, as well as members of the SGD and an award to celebrate gardens that have flourished over time.
