Yorkshire Garden Centres marked Yorkshire Day with a charity spinathon across all seven of its sites to raise funds for Martin House Children’s Hospice. Team members took turns cycling on static bikes in checkout areas, aiming to cover the distance from each centre to the hospice’s base in Boston Spa.

Organised by the People and Culture team, the event encouraged staff and customers alike to get involved. Distances ranged from 16 to 68 miles, depending on the location. Group People and Culture Manager Steph Harrison said the event was a fun, team-wide effort for a “fabulous Yorkshire cause.”

Yorkshire Garden Centre Group's Yorkshire Day charity spinathon tops £1,000

Team members at a Bradford garden centre group who held a multi-site spinathon on Yorkshire Day raised £1,038 for their charity of the year.

A total of 84 team members rode 267 miles on static bikes in the checkout areas at Yorkshire Garden Centres' sites at Tong, Tingley, Otley, Bingley, Pennine and Dean's York and Scarborough to raise the funds for Martin House Children's Hospice.

The initiative was organised by Yorkshire Garden Centres' People and Culture team. Group People and Culture manager, Steph Harrison, said: "The mileage represents the total distance from Martin House's base at Boston Spa near Wetherby to each of our sites. It was a tough challenge, but our customers' fantastic support and generosity kept the teams going. Our team of 14 riders raised an amazing £288 at Tong alone."

The spinathon is part of a wider campaign to raise £30,000 for Martin House. Other initiatives have included a Pennies donation scheme, which has already raised over £11,000, and a cycle ride led by MD Mark Farnsworth, raising over £5,000.

Yorkshire Garden Centres includes sites in Tong, Tingley, Otley, Bingley, York, Scarborough, and Pennine (Huddersfield), with each site having a charity champion to support fundraising and local giving.
