Blue Diamond backed garden wins first Britain in Bloom sustainable award
Transition Town Wellington’s Community Garden Project in Somerset has scooped the first-ever RHS Award for Sustainable Gardening at the RHS Britain in Bloom national finals in Brighton, made possible in part by funding from Blue Diamond Garden Centres.
The win marks a milestone in community-led sustainability and gardening innovation.
Nationwide competition
Blue Diamond kicked off a nationwide competition last year, offering £10,000 in plants and garden care products distributed among five winning projects, plus expert horticultural support. Transition Town Wellington used this funding to transform their garden, enhance community involvement, and promote environmental awareness.
The improvements at Fox’s Field include new herb and flower gardens, picnic spaces, and vegetable bales, all praised by Britain in Bloom judge Terry Porter for their creativity and resourcefulness.
Anita Roy, the group’s Chair, credits Blue Diamond’s funding for enabling everything from buying supplies to hosting events and spreading the group’s ecological message. The project’s success has influenced the council’s acquisition of a 6.5-acre green corridor, now protected for generations.
With strong collaboration between the community and local council, Transition Town Wellington is setting a shining example of how grassroots efforts can drive sustainability and wellbeing in towns across the UK.
