The first price comparison survey for 2007 visited 16 garden retailers across the UK, comparing the prices and availability of 39 well known products. Anything from a bag of Growmore and a pair of suede gardening gloves to a 1L Foxglove or a cup of coffee in the restaurant were tested. The retailers included the resurgent Wyevale; Garden Centre of the year, Bents, and the DIY stores. But as in previous surveys, it was the independent that provided the most competitive offer. The latest research from Britain's Leisure and Outdoor Furniture Association (LOFA) confirms the market for outdoor furniture last year grew 10% to reach a new record at £557 million. Pathclear and Weedol Ingredients to be Withdrawn
As part of the EU review of pesticides, rulings have been made that will see two weedkiller ingredients, simazine and paraquat, withdrawn from use in the UK home and garden market over the next few years. Scotts Launch RoseClear 3
Scotts has announced the launch in March of RoseClear 3. It will replace RoseClear 2, a victim of the latest European review of pesticides, which will be illegal to sell after 25th July. The company claims that the new systemic fungicide in RoseClear 3, myclobutanil, offers excellent control of the diseases powdery mildew, rose blackspot and rust. First Wilkinsons, Now ASDA tells Garden Suppliers - INNOVATE
ASDA Buyer Manager, Jason Shaw, gave a blunt message to a packed meeting of GIMA members, yesterday. UK suppliers must INNOVATE or they will not compete with cheaper imports. Longacres - No 1 in latest price comparisons
Independent Garden Centres have claimed the top 3 places in our September prices survey, while the best DIY multiple, Homebase, could only manage 10th out of 17 retailers visited.
