RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 sees a veteran Gold Medal winner return after a nine year absence.
Medwyn Williams will once again set up in the Grand Pavilion to exhibit his 11 times Gold Medal Award winning vegetable display, with the support of sponsors, CANNA, the leading brand in plant nutrients, additives and potting mixes. Medwyn’s accomplishment of 11 consecutive golds is one that has never before been achieved with vegetables, and he hopes that he can continue his winning streak upon his return.
For the past eight months Medwyn has been working with CANNA, producer of nutrients and growing mediums for the cultivation of plants, in order to develop the biggest and best vegetables possible. CANNA’s innovative, cutting edge products are used to grow high quality, beautiful vegetables which echo Medwyn’s ethos; “If you can’t eat it, don’t show it!”
The display will use the traditional 1920s style of showcasing which was first made popular by Edwin Beckett, and contrasts but compliments Medwyn’s modern growing techniques which also utilise the Autopot watering system. Over the next few years, in fact, he is embarking upon a process to negate the need of any soil at all. He shares CANNA’s passion for protecting the environment, and is keen to demonstrate the fact that healthy, delicious food can be grown anywhere. CANNA’s Coco Professional is a sustainable product that is made from recycled coconut husks, which were previously discarded. They are soaked in water and converted into bales before cleaning and processing to become a product that stimulates root development, combats root rot, is ecologically friendly and requires effortless cultivation.
Medwyn’s return to the show has been prompted by the desire to promote this message as well as the fact that he will be joined by his son, Alwyn and grandson Owain on the stand. Medwyn said: “I am thrilled to have three generations of Williams’ on the stand this year and am looking forward to my return to Chelsea with my new sponsors CANNA on board. I hope to stage a few brand new varieties, particularly on the tomato side, so watch this space for more information on that!”
Ellie Blackburn, from CANNA, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring such an icon of the horticultural world. His use of our products to prepare for RHS Chelsea 2019 is a real seal of approval for us.”
