A pink phenomenon
The new Calibrachoa mini petunia 'PinkTastic’ is tipped to become one of the UK’s biggest horticultural trends this summer having won two leading awards, not just judged highly commercial by Europe-wide experts at Fleuroselect, but also scooping an RHS People’s Choice prize. It’s receiving an additional consumer PR push as it enters its peak season, so those in the trade are urged to prepare for a ‘PinkTastic’ summer of sales and planting.
Suitable for window boxes, hanging baskets and containers, the ‘PinkTastic’ Calibrachoa was created by German breeding company Selecta One. It’s extra special because each double flower has a crested arrangement of bi-coloured inner petals – creating a far more dazzling appearance than single flowers, adding what looks almost like another dimension to its appearance. And because it produces more shoots, it also generates more blooms – an array of glorious two-tone flowers, all summer long.
Growers appreciate its easy growth, improved root system, strong branching and mildew tolerance, while it’s a huge hit for retailers because of its early, vigorous flowering habits and unique colour pattern – already marketed by one as an “on-trend, vintage look.”
Improved root system for better growth
It’s been developed with particularly strong roots, so it can absorb more nutrients and has a more far more fruitful branching habit than most. More shoots mean more blooms, and its double bi-coloured pink and white flowers create a striking 3D effect. Since a plant’s vitality and its health go hand-in-hand, 'PinkTastic' is particularly resistant to mildew.
It’s also won the FleuroStar award, a sought-after prize organised by Fleuroselect which sees a panel of over thirty industry experts evaluate contesting plants on point of sale attractiveness and commercial potential. FleuroStar judges were enchanted by its on-trend colour combination and bi-coloured inner petals, and the decision was supported by the panel’s international retail experts who almost unanimously predicted high commercial potential.
Not only has the prize-winning plant been singled-out as pick of the year by Fleuroselect’s Europe-wide horticulture experts, but it also scooped a People’s Choice award at the RHS's flagship garden, Wisley. Visitors were invited to vote for their favourite plant, and ‘PinkTastic’ was elected number one for Calibrachoa in hanging baskets. With a nod from the pros and the British public, it’s set to become a pink phenomenon as we enter the spring and summer planting season.
