Indoor garden centre manager

This will be a permanent full time position, working 4 days per week and alternate weekends, as well as some Bank Holidays. The working pattern is 10 days per fortnight on a rota basis, a flexible approach to working hours is required.

Usual Hours of work
Monday to Saturday
October – February - 8.30 am to 5.30 pm
March to September - 8.30 am to 6.00 pm

9.00am – 4.45 pm (depending on the time of year)

Personal skills & Requirements
As the position involves a high amount of customer interaction, being helpful and polite is a vital requirement, in addition to this, you will need to:

  • To have Garden Centre retail experience at supervisory / managerial level
  • To have a good overall knowledge of Garden Centre products, but particularly the indoor related products
  • have experience with buying products
  • have excellent customer service skills
  • have experience using tills
  • have good computer and EPOS skills
  • have excellent communication skills and be confident
  • be punctual, reliable and a consistently keen attitude towards work
  • be honest, trustworthy and polite
  • be able to work independently and use initiative, whilst also being a team player
  • be conscientious, self-motivated, versatile, enthusiastic, adaptable and creative
  • have excellent organisational skills with a positive, flexible and committed hands-on attitude
  • have a good level of physical fitness, as the work requires being on your feet for most of the day and lifting will be required to carry out this role effectively
  • be efficient, highly flexible, positive, committed and capable of working under pressure

Main Responsibilities & Duties

  • To work with the owners and manager and other management team, to ensure the growth and success of the business
  • To assist in the smooth running of the Garden Centre and provide our customers with a high level of customer service
  • To give help and advice to customers on all indoor related products
  • To ensure that high standards are maintained throughout the Garden Centre and maximum sales and profits are achieved
  • To lead by example
  • To work in conjunction with the manager, to ensure the Garden Centre is always adequately staffed, using competent and knowledgeable staff and build a strong productive and customer focused team
  • To ensure the Garden Centre is well stocked, clean and tidy at all times
  • The position will involve some buying but the product groups are still to be decided
  • To have an understanding of employment law
  • To have a good understanding of Health and Safety matters and to keep up to date with legislation and be prepared to undertake any training that may be necessary due to new legislation.
  • To have involvement with the security of the business, which would include being a key holder
  • To be involved with interviewing for new staff and staff review meetings
