SGD Autumn Conference 2017

Date: 18th November 2017
Location: Royal Geographical Society 1 Kensington Gore London, SW7 2AR
Website: sgd.org.uk

Award-winning Danish landscape architecture studio SLA, responsible for some of Scandinavia's most contemporary and climate-friendly urban landscapes and public spaces, will be speaking in the UK for the first time at the SGD Autumn Conference in November.

Joining a panel of speakers to explore the use of water in the garden and landscape,  CEO Mette Skjold will discuss the studio's work including its award-winning £15 million nature-based adaptation of inner Copenhagen, The Soul of Norrebro, and explain how the studio seeks to solve urban challenges through a multi-disciplined approach to water.

Made up of a multi-disciplinary team of biologists, designers, plant and eco-system experts, SLA places nature at the heart of all its designs to help solve some of the most challenging urban issues such as air pollution, noise and water-management.

When it is completed in 2022, The Soul of Norrebro, which received the World Landscape Award of Excellence, will be a flagship example of how cities can deal with torrential rain to avoid flooding and create greener and more natural experiences for the community.

Mette Skjold said: “It is an immense pleasure for me and SLA to be speaking at the SGD Autumn Conference in London. As an international landscape architect working with nature-based solutions to today’s hardest urban problems, it is especially meaningful to present our approach in England – the home of the great landscape architect and gardener Capability Brown. Just like Brown, we at SLA work to equate the built and the grown environment. Only when nature and city is not seen as each other’s opposite, but as each other’s prerequisite, can we hope to create true sustainable, livable and social cities of nature.”

Skjold will be joined at the SGD Autumn Conference by four other world-class speakers: international landscape designer Tom Stuart Smith MSCD, Andrew Ewing, one of the UK's leading water feature designers, award-winning garden designer Andrew Wilson FSGD and Phillip Johnson, one of Australia's leading sustainable landscape designers.

Discounted ‘Early Bird’ tickets are available until 9th October 2017. Visit the SGD website to read more and book tickets online.
