How are you making the most of the Pokemon craze? Does your centre happen to be a Pokestop or a Gym? Do you or your staff use the app yourself?

Pokemon is now officially more than a game - it's a cultural phenomenon. Millennials and their families are interacting with their local communities - including your garden centre - on a much more intimate scale than ever before. How are you making the most of the craze? Does your centre happen to be a Pokestop or a Gym? Do you or your staff use the app yourself? Garden centres such as Cardwell and Chessington have already been actively inviting customers to search amongst the plant areas - will you be doing the same?

Garden Centres are missing a trick if they don't engage with the Pokemon craze. This game is getting the kids (and adults) out into the real world, albeit chasing mythical creatures, but it's fun. Don't think that PM players will be a pain, parents take kiddies out looking for PMs to catch and a garden centre Pokestop or Gym would get the kids WANTING to go into the garden centres and allow the parents shop or lunch while the kids search for characters. Harness the power of Pokemon. Try it yourselves ( I did - for research purposes of course), it's fun. I do admit I'd rather they were better engaged with reality and the real wonders in the real world, if they could turn their attention to butterflies, bees and birds, and plants too they could have even more fun. The more people 'playing' Pokemon the more success they will have, Get your garden centre on the Pokemon trail and your footfall will improve, you will make your garden centre a place the kids want to be, they will associate it with fun and they will return when they have grown into adults and have a garden. Here's a piece I wrote about the two sides of the Pokemon coin. https://hartley-botanic.co.uk/magazine/lets-play-pokemon-planet/
