VAT CHANGES - What you need to know
Starting from 1 December 2008, standard rate VAT was cut from 17.5% to 15%. The Chancellor’s Pre-Budget Report on the 9th December 2009 confirmed that the rate would revert back to 17.5% from 1 January 2010. Goods or services subject to reduced or zero rated VAT are not affected by either of these changes. Retailers might experience higher than usual demand for big ticket items as customers bring forward purchases to take advantage of the last remaining month of 15% VAT.
